Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt: Stop #16 (Purple Team)

Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt: Stop #16 (Purple Team)

The Hunt begins at NOON Mountain time on April 16 and ends at midnight Mountain on April 19, 2015, so you have a long weekend to complete all 32 stops and maximize your chances at prizes!

For a Scavenger Hunt overview, please click here.

Welcome to the Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt! I am a part of Team Purple, and this is Stop #16. If you’re just joining us, there are two loops—pink and purple—and they begin at Lisa Bergren’s site (purple) and Robin Hatcher’s site (pink) for stop #1 for either stream. If you complete either the pink loop or purple loop, you can enter for a Kindle Paperwhite and the 17 autographed books from that loop (by having the Secret Word clues together). If you complete BOTH loops, you can enter for the Grand Prize of a Kindle Fire HDX and ALL 34 autographed books (by adding up all the Secret Numbers). So write everything down as you go—if you run out of time, you can return to it later.

The Hunt begins at NOON Mountain time on April 16 and ends at MIDNIGHT Mountain time on April 19, 2015, so you have 3.5 days to complete all 32 stops, enter all individual, pink, purple, and Grand Prize contests and maximize your chances for a prize! Winners will be announced on April 20, 2015.

ALSO, please don’t use Internet Explorer to navigate through the loops. Some web sites won’t show up using IE. Please use Chrome or Firefox!

Without further ado, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to my guest for the Scavenger Hunt, Roseanna White. I've had the pleasure of meeting Roseanna through blogging. She's multi-talented and fun!

Now, the official Bio:

Roseanna White is the author of 9 novels, ranging from biblical fiction to American-set historical romances. When she isn't writing, she's editing, designing book covers, and homeschooling her 2 small children.

Here's A Summary of her latest book: A Soft Breath of Wind

A gift that has branded her for life

Zipporah is thirteen when the Spirit descends upon her, opening her eyes to a world beyond the physical goings-on of the villa outside Rome she has always called home. Within hours, she learns what serving the Lord can cost. Forever scarred after a vicious attack, she knows her call is to use this discernment to protect the Way. She knows she must serve the rest of her life at Tutelos, where the growing Roman church has congregated. She knows her lot is set.

Yet is it so wrong to wish that her master, the kind and handsome young Benjamin Visibullis, will eventually see her as something more than a sister in Christ?

Samuel Asinius, adoptive son of a wealthy Roman, has always called Benjamin brother. When their travels take them to Jerusalem for Passover, the last thing he expects is to cross paths with the woman who sold him into slavery as a child the mother he long ago purged from his heart. His sister, Dara, quickly catches Benjamin s eye, but Samuel suspects there is something dark at work.

When Dara, a fortune-teller seeking the will of a shadowy master determined to undermine the Way, comes into the path of Zipporah, a whirlwind descends upon them all.

Only the soft wind of the Spirit can heal their scars...with a love neither divination nor discernment could foresee.

And now here is Roseanna’s EXCLUSIVE content that you’ll find only on this hunt!

Thanks for hosting me, Missy! This is my first time participating in the Scavenger Hunt, and I’m really excited to be a part. =)

Though all my published novels are historicals, they fall into two categories—straight up historical romance, and then my biblicals. It’s handy that “biblical fiction” is its own genre, because otherwise I’d have to debate whether or not to call them “romance.” By strict genre definitions, they’re not. They’re more…love stories.

As a new writer, I wasn’t sure what the difference was. I had romance in my stories, right? Happily ever afters. True love. All that stuff that I was (and am) fully convinced most stories need, because seriously. What’s life without love?? But romance has specific rules. Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy gets girl. (There are, of course, variations on that theme…) But my biblical stories often go more like this: Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Boy does something stupid—like dying or having a whole harem or marrying someone else.

Yeah, that usually shakes things up…

In A Soft Breath of Wind, I definitely wanted a strong love story. But I wanted a surprising love story too, and let’s face it—much as I absolutely adore romances, it’s not usually a question of who or if, it’s a question of how the heroine ends up with her true love. But in Soft Breath, it wasn’t so simple. Zipporah, my heroine, is unique. She has an amazing gift of the Spirit that allows her to see into the spiritual realm, and that gift has resulted in attacks that have left her scarred. She knows well she isn’t beautiful. She knows she doesn’t have the heart of her handsome, kind, and faithful young master, Benjamin…but she can’t help but love him.

Unfortunately, Benjamin definitely “does something stupid.” Something there’s no easy recovery from.

What I loved about writing this aspect of this book was revealing to both the reader and the other characters the hidden beauty in my heroine. The strength of heart, of spirit, of soul, of will. The vulnerability that could make her hide her face in shame one moment and stand defiantly against the world in the next. I wanted Zipporah to find the kind of happily ever after that goes far beyond romance, yet includes it. The kind that can overcome anything, because it’s rooted as much in faith as in attraction.

I wanted someone to look at her and think she’s beautiful not in spite of her scars, but because of them. Because they are a testament to her faith, to her bravery, to her willingness to sacrifice herself for the Church. So that’s what she got. ;-)

I love writing those straight-up romances too—that’s what I’m working on right now. But there’s something I find so fun about throwing those rules out the window and figuring out how to the get to the Happily Ever After…without the reader having a clue what “happily” might mean.

I had wondered what the difference was between romance and, say, historical fiction (because really, almost all stories have some romance in them). How fortunate "Biblical Fiction" allows one to evade making the distinction!
