Video Recap of the RWA Conference

Here's a video of the Romance Writers of America Conference I went to in July. Very fun! There's even a shot of my husband and me (in the emerald green dress) around 8.5 minutes in. :)

You can see the workshops and luncheons we attend. As well as the book signing and awards ceremony. A great snapshot of what it's like to attend a large writers conference.

Someone on Facebook shared this cartoon with me, and I loved it! It's from Off the Leash--Daily Dog Cartoons.

I thought I'd share my own real-life version with you, showing my very loving (yet demanding!) grand-dog. :)

Here he is getting close...

And finally, right where he wants to be...

Of course, how could anyone ever say no to that sweet face?!

Winnie Griggs

I am pleased to host fellow Love Inspired author Winnie Griggs. I've had the opportunity to meet Winnie in person at conferences and have enjoyed getting to know her. Not only is she a computer programmer and writer, but she's also known for presenting fantastic writing workshops. Winnie's ninth book from Love Inspired will be released in June.

Haven't heard of Winnie Griggs before? Here's an official bio:

Winnie Griggs grew up in south Louisiana in an undeveloped area her friends thought of as the back of beyond.  She and her two younger siblings spent many an hour exploring the overgrown land around her home, cutting jungle trails, building forts and frontier camps, and looking for pirate ships on the nearby bayou.   Once she ‘grew up’ she found other outlets for dealing with all those wonderful, adventurous imaginary friends by filling notebooks with their stories.

Eventually she found her own Prince Charming, a rancher whose white steed takes the form of a tractor and whose kingdom is situated in a small rural community that she loves to call home, and together they’ve built their own storybook happily-ever-after that  includes four now grown children, two of whom are twins.

Now a multi-published, award winning author, Winnie feels blessed to be able to share her stories with readers through her writings for Love Inspired Historical books.  You can learn more about Winnie at www.winniegriggs.com

Today, Winnie is giving us a special treat, an excerpt from her book coming in October...

Advanced Sneak Peek of A Family for Christmas
by Winnie Griggs

Last September my book Handpicked Husband was released.  It was the first book in my four book Texas Grooms series and I’m tickled to report it just recently picked up an RT Reviewer’s Choice award.  The second book in the series, The Bride Next Door, will release in June.  This series follows the lives of four men who left Philadelphia to travel to Texas and build new lives for themselves.  They are four VERY different men and I’m having a whole lot of fun telling their stories.

As part of this Scavenger Hunt I’ll be giving away The Bride Next Door (Book 2), but there’s already lots of information scattered across the web about it and Handpicked Husband (Book 1).   So I thought it might be fun to give you an exclusive sneak peek at the third book.  This one features the youngest (and cockiest!) of the four men, Chance Dawson.  It’s titled A Family For Christmas and will be released in October of this year.

Here’s a shortened version of the opening pages - hope you enjoy!

Turnabout, Texas November 1895
“Stop! You can’t do this.”
Eve’s protests fell on deaf ears as the conductor continued to forcibly escort her young friend off the train without so much as a backward glance. She trotted to keep up with the long-legged official as he moved toward the exit, his fist firmly clutching Leo’s collar.
“Please be careful!” she called out as she saw Leo stumble. “He’s just a boy. Don’t hurt him.”
But the conductor still didn’t slow down. Did the man have no feelings?
As soon as they were on the platform, Eve scooted around to face him, determined to halt his progress and make him listen to her.
“Mr. McIvers, you can’t mean to just toss him from the train and leave him here.” She tried to infuse her voice with as much authority and confidence as possible but was afraid there was a touch of pleading there as well. How had she not realized before now that Leo was a stowaway?
She risked a glance Leo’s way. The trapped, desperate look that had crossed the boy’s face when the conductor pounced on him a moment ago was still there. It was enough to break her heart—no child should look so haunted.
“And what do you suggest I do with him?” The conductor, a beanpole of a man with bushy sideburns and an officious manner, looked down his nose at her as if she were no older than the ten-year-old in his grip.
... Eve drew herself up to her full height and tried to match his stern expression. “I’m certain there’s been some kind of misunderstanding. If you’ll just allow Leo to explain—”
Leo tried to shake himself free of the conductor’s grasp, but the man tightened his hold. “The time to explain has come and gone,” the man said sternly. “He’s a stowaway, pure and simple. And he rides no farther on my train.”
...Eve spread her hands, trying once more to appeal to the strict conductor’s sympathies. “He’s only a boy. What will become of him if you leave him here?”
But the man refused to bend. “Miss Pickering, I’m sure your concern does you credit, but don’t let his age fool you. I’ve met his kind before and they’ll smile innocently to your face while they pick your pocket. I imagine a scalawag like him will get on fine, or end up in jail one day.”
Eve planted her fists on her hips. “You can’t treat a child like a stray dog and dump him at your first opportunity.”
She glanced around, looking for help of some sort, and her gaze snagged on that of a gentleman standing across the platform. Her eyes widened as she realized he was watching her. There was a note of curiosity and sympathy in his smoky blue eyes. And something else, something warm and compelling that made it impossible for her to look away, that made her certain she could trust him with her problems.
An older couple dressed for travel crossed between them, breaking the connection, and Eve abruptly came to her senses.... What in the world was she thinking? Such fanciful notions led to nothing but trouble. And asking a strange gentleman for assistance was not something a proper young lady did unless the circumstances were indeed dire.
Still feeling the tingly impact of those eyes, she did her best to push that aside and deal with the more important issue at hand.

Winnie Griggs's new release, The Bride Next Door, is about two people with opposite goals in life who may just find love in a marriage of convenience. It is available at bookstores or online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christian Book Distributors and elsewhere.

Remembering and Honoring Mothers

I'm so thankful today for mothers. For those who have passed on as well as those who are still with us. I'm thankful for their love, their devotion, their sacrifices. And even though they can never be perfect, I'm thankful for how hard they try/tried to get it right.

I'm thankful for all the times my mother took care of me while I was sick. For leading my Brownie troop. For sewing my special Easter dresses. For throwing big spend-the-night birthday parties (and for making me include every single girl in the class). For homemade doughnuts, pecan pie and "just chicken." And most of all, for teaching me that I could be anything I wanted to be when I grew up.

Those of you who've lost mothers, I pray for you today, because I know this can be a difficult holiday. My mother is still living, and even though she lives six hours away, I'm thankful I still have her with me. In fact, I'm excited she'll be coming to visit us this week.

Happy Mother's Day!

Buster Posey's World Series Rings!

Our nephew, Buster Posey, just received his 2012 World Series ring yesterday. I wasn't there, of course, but part of his family got to fly out to California for the event. I look forward to seeing photos! But in the meantime, I just read an article about the ceremony that included a photo of the new ring (click here) and thought I'd share.

Photo from Mercurynews.com (courtesy of San Francisco Giants)
I imagine it's beautiful in person!

I finally got a chance to see the 2010 ring at Christmas. It's amazing--and massive and sparkling! I wish the camera could do it justice. Here's a shot of it. I asked Buster to put it on for me to take a photo.

To give you an idea of how big the ring really is, here's my daughter (whose hand is my size) wearing it. :)

And while we're talking championship rings! My niece, Samantha Posey, shared with me her impressive NCAA Division II National Championship ring for her Valdosta State softball team. Very exciting fall for our extended family!

The RITA® Call!

I've had a whirlwind week but wanted to finally share the excitement of some news I got last week. My 2012 book from Love Inspired, A House Full of Hope, has been named a Romance Writers of America RITA® Finalist!

You know, writers dream of getting The Call. That's the call from an editor or agent telling us they want to buy our book. The call where we find out we've made our first sale. But getting a call from RWA about the RITA is also a dream come true for me.

So let me tell you a little about my RITA call. It's hilarious!

The phone rang, and caller ID said it was from Nebraska. Well, I thought it was my good friend Mary Connealy and was worried something was wrong! (We normally email or text unless we're at a conference.)

When I answered, the caller identified herself as Cindy Kirk. And I thought, Oh, how cool! She's going to invite me to one of her wonderful brainstorming retreats!! (I've been a bit envious of a group that she and some other writers have formed where they plot out all their books for the year).  But she didn't invite me. When she asked if I knew what that day was, I honestly had to tell her no.

Then it hit me (OMGosh!!) that it was the end of March and could be the day RITA calls go out. I yelled, NO WAY! And she said yes, A House Full of Hope was a RITA finalist. I screamed in her poor ears. Then laughed--I would imagine a bit like a maniac. Then cried.

Poor Cindy! :)

It's been so much fun to celebrate with friends. And I'm honored to have my book listed alongside the other authors. You can click here to see a full list. I'm especially excited that the RWA national conference is in Atlanta this year so my husband will be able to attend the awards ceremony with me!

Thanks for letting me share the fun with you. Also! My new release, Georgia Sweethearts, has been spotted in Walmart and on shelves! And of course it's available online. So please check it out! You can visit my website for an excerpt and to find links to various sites that carry the book.

Thanks for your support!

Much love,
Missy

P.S. I hope you had a blessed Easter! He is risen!
